An Engine Overhaul
What does an engine overhaul include?
An engine overhaul involves work on the heart of the engine, an area not affected during standard repairs. It's a complex process that includes installing new engine piston rings, bearings and seals, and boring the cylinder. Crankshaft and cylinder head can be replaced or repaired. One overhaul can make a big difference from another, depending on where your engine runs worse than before. If your trusty engine has served you for many years but is no longer performing as well as it once did, it may be time to consider an engine overhaul. An overhaul will extend the life of an engine and restore its performance to new or nearly new condition, which is a better return on investment than buying a new machine.
The difference between an in-frame kit and overhaul kit
An in-frame kit
An frame kit does not contain the engine front and rear body gaskets, only the main bearings, rod bearings, cylinder kit, upper gasket kit and oil pan gasket because in-frame repair is the process of rebuilding an engine without removing the front cover or crankshaft. The engine stays in the frame and does not need to be removed from the body. Generally speaking, the in-frame process is mainly used for regular preventive maintenance.
An overhaul kit
Overhaul kits contain more: a cylinder kit, main bearings, rod bearings, front and rear crankshaft seals and a complete overhaul gasket kit, since the overhaul process requires the engine to be removed from the vehicle's frame. The rebuilding process often requires re-truncating the engine block to smooth the surface and re-boring the cylinder head to adjust the clearances in the cylinder bores. During this process, the entire engine is disassembled.
